Things to Do in Moustique
The swamp has its own itinerary.
Moustique is best explored slowly. Start on the water before the heat settles in, walk the cypress boardwalks, fish the bends, wander through town, or stay out long enough to watch the lanterns come on.
There aren’t many schedules here, and that’s mostly the point. The weather, water, and daylight tend to decide what happens next.
Take your time. The swamp isn’t going anywhere.

On Foot
Guided Swamp Walks
Raised boardwalks wind through the Broussard Wetlands, where local guides talk wildlife, plant lore, old flood marks, and the kind of swamp knowledge that rarely makes it into guidebooks.
- Misty mornings with herons gliding overhead
- Cypress knees rising like old bones from the water
- Late-day light across the blackwater
Ask at the General Store for current boardwalk conditions.

After Sundown
Night Market
What began as a seasonal gathering became the closest thing Moustique has to a town square. Lanterns go up before sundown. Fryers start early. Somebody brings a fiddle. Somebody always complains about the parking.
- Fried catfish, boudin, swamp honey
- Hand-carved charms and reed baskets
- Soft Cajun and Creole music after dark
Stay until the lanterns come on.
Things to Do On the Water

Airboat Tours
Fast, loud, and built for open marsh. Local guides run broad water corridors where alligators, egrets, nutria, and weather are usually the main attraction.
- Alligator nests along the banks
- Wide-open water reflecting sky like glass
- Long views across open marsh
Routes vary with water levels and weather.
Fishing at Baptiste’s Bend
A slow curve in the swamp where perch gather close to the reeds and fishermen tend to speak more quietly than they do elsewhere.
- Elevated fishing platforms
- Good perch before the heat sets in
- Reeds thick enough to cut the wind
- Best fishing before the midday heat
Old Moustique
Historic Water Tower
Built in 1928, the tower bears a collection of hand-cut marks around its lower supports. Their meaning depends entirely on who you ask.
- Rust-red steel
- Hand-cut markings
- Short trail from the parish road
- Clear view across the wetlands

A Quieter Walk
Thibodeaux Boardwalk
A short boardwalk dedicated to a local fisherman lost on the water years ago. The trail passes through one of the quieter stretches of cypress north of town.
- Cypress shadows stretching over blackwater
- Soft lantern lighting near the entrance
- Benches overlooking the marsh
Ask at the General Store for current trail conditions.
Local Lore
Places People Talk About
Moustique has no ghost tour. It does, however, have places locals treat with a little more respect than outsiders usually understand.
The Whistling Bridge
The Drowned Lantern Path
The Listening Trees
The Old Parish Dock
A few rules locals tend to keep
Don’t whistle after dark.
Don’t follow lights over the water.
Don’t answer what you can’t see.
If the frogs go quiet, so should you.
